:: Harvey's Story ::
Harvey Frank, one of Project HIRED’s hardest working Board members
for many years, was recently diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gehrig's disease).
Harvey is facing this challenge bravely, but it is a most difficult fight. Recently a group of us
from different parts of Harvey's life (co-workers, neighbors, Project HIRED) have come together to
show our support for a man we love and admire. We know that Harvey's fight is going to require
funds far beyond what insurance will coverand we're determined to help
Harvey is researching alternative treatments, including a form of stem cell therapy in
Argentina, Chinese herbs, and is taking numerous vitamins and supplements, all of which
are not covered by medical insurance.
The "Every Day Counts" fundraising event in celebration of Harvey's life will be held in
April 2004 to help defray costs involved in his medical care. Please join our community
in helping Harvey to obtain the best possible treatments available.
More about Harvey |
:: How you can help ::
As many of you know, our friend Harvey continues his battle with A.L.S. In April 2004, friends and
colleagues gathered in Mill Valley to participate in a successful fundraising effort on his behalf.
Those funds allowed Harvey to travel to China and participate in an experimental stem cell procedure
sadly, the treatment did not slow the progression of this devastating, degenerative disease.
Harvey is now confined to a wheelchair and for several months was not able to leave his home. But a
substantial portion of the funds donated last year made it possible to install an elevator outside in
his home providing Harvey with a precious measure of mobility, for which he is grateful.
Over the last year, Harvey has lost the ability to speak, eat, and breathe on his own. In January, he was
put on a ventilator and now requires around the clock care. The remaining funds, being used to pay for these
home heathcare costs, are expected to be fully depleted within a few months. As you can imagine, the cost of
home healthcare is enormousat $15/hour, that's $75,000/year.
Much of Harvey's professional life was focused on improving the lives and opportunities of people with
disabilities in the workplace. Now it's our turn to improve his life and his chances for survival. There
are exciting prospects on the horizon for the treatment of A.L.S. Please join us in helping keep Harvey
safe until those treatments come online.
We are again asking you to open your hearts and show your generosity by supporting Harvey's Home Care Fund.
Your contributions will go directly to defraying the costs of his care:
One 8 hour shift of home health care = $120.00
One 16 hour shift of home health care = $240.00
One week of home health care = $1,680.00
